How a Brick House gets Termites

Contrary to popular belief, termites can get into a house with a brick or HardiePlank®-type exteriors. Subterranean termites, specifically, come in from underground, entering cracks or weep holes and going for the wood frame and walls within the house. In short, they will make their way in from the ground up, literally, and slip right in underneath the bricks and fiber cement siding. That's why we still get plenty of subterranean termites in homes in the Houston area, many of which were built with such exteriors. These materials are excellent in our climate to stand up to humidity and harsh weather. It's just that the very exterior of a home has nothing to with how subterranean termites make their way around and into a home.Springtime in Houston is typically when these termites swarm, emerging from being embedded in their wood habitats to create new colonies. There are commonly seen swarming out from firewood piles, sheds and yes, home interiors. These are winged creatures during the swarm and typically described as black or black and white bugs.
