Chimney Parging [Big Safety Issues]...

Avoid Risk of Creosote Build Up

Mascot Mitch knows his chimney parging niche!

Smoke Chamber

This part [smoke chamber] of the chimney directly is the area well below the flue, above the throat damper. Looking like an inverted funnel, it is built for smoke/gas to leave thru the chimney vs. settling in the firebox. If a smoke chamber is comprised of bricks with holes in them [or is not smooth] it is not conducive to efficient air escape and often can result in smoke problems, extra creosote and fire risks.

Parging

The process of Parging refers to sealing and smoothing the masonry surface of the smoke chamber. This makes it more conducive to airflow...and less conducive to air travel. Our Technicians apply [often by spray] a refractory mortar when they parge your chimney. This results in gaps and holes being completely filled with the result being an incredibly smoother smoke chamber surface.

Benefits of Parging

Parging actually insulates your smoke chamber and protects the surrounding walls from the excessive heat of the fire. The refractory mortar we use creates a new smooth surface that increases safety and efficiency of the chimney and fireplace system.

If the smoke chamber surface is not smooth, it inhibits the exit of smoke. This creates additional unnecessary time that smoke and gas spend in the chamber. This results in gases/smoke settling in the walls of the chimney...forming creosote. Creosote is a highly flammable substance that creates a vicious cycle....further decreasing the airflow and adding to more of itself...creosote. As it builds up, it can become more difficult to remove.

When our Technician parges your smoke chamber smooth, hot gas and smoke travel much faster up and out of the flue which means much less risk of creosote.

So, by way of summary, smoke chamber parging benefits include:

* Greatly improved fireplace draft

* Much less creosote

* Lower & Safer Heat Transfer

* Easier Maintenance

How Do I know If my Smoke Chambers Needs Parging?

Unless one is trained in Chimney Safety and inspection as our Technicians are, it can be difficult to know if your chamber needs parging. A Professional Chimney Sweep can identify the issues within a smoke chamber and preemptively act in Parge it ...well before it becomes a Safety issue or Fire Hazard.
